Key Hazards
- Crush injuries from compaction equipment
- Workers entering or reaching into compactor chambers
- Jams causing sudden material or equipment movement
- Cuts or punctures from sharp waste materials
- Unexpected startup during clearing or maintenance
- Poor housekeeping around loading and access areas
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Large trash compactors use powerful force to compress waste. That force can cause fatal crush injuries if workers enter, reach into, or work around the compactor incorrectly.
Workers should never climb into a compactor chamber, hopper, or chute. Even when equipment appears off, stored energy, controls, or another person activating the system can create serious danger.
Loading procedures should be followed carefully. Waste should be placed in the compactor as intended, and workers should avoid using hands or feet to push material into danger areas.
Push tools may be used when allowed by procedure, but hands, arms, legs, and body parts should stay away from pinch and crush points.
Jams should be reported and cleared only by trained and authorized workers using the proper procedure. Workers should not attempt to clear jams alone or while the equipment can start.
Lockout procedures may be required before maintenance, jam clearing, cleaning, or any task that exposes workers to moving parts or stored energy.
Waste materials can include sharp edges, broken glass, metal, chemicals, pressurized containers, or unknown items. PPE may be needed when loading or handling waste.
Safe compactor use depends on respecting the machine’s force, keeping workers out of danger areas, reporting jams, and never bypassing procedures for convenience.
Safety Reminders
- Never climb into a trash compactor.
- Keep hands and body parts out of loading and crush areas.
- Use approved push tools when needed.
- Do not clear jams unless trained and authorized.
- Use lockout procedures before maintenance or jam clearing.
- Watch for sharp or hazardous waste materials.
- Keep the area around the compactor clean and clear.
Ask the Crew
- Are workers staying out of the compactor chamber and hopper?
- Is the correct loading procedure being followed?
- Are push tools available if needed?
- Who is authorized to clear jams?
- Does any task require lockout before work begins?
