Key Hazards

  • Dust inhalation from chalk or marking powder
  • Exposure to marking products or additives
  • Trips and falls on uneven ground, curbs, or holes
  • Workers exposed to traffic or equipment while marking
  • Strains from pushing or carrying chalking equipment
  • Poor visibility to drivers, equipment operators, or pedestrians

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Line chalkers are used to mark fields, parking lots, work areas, layouts, and temporary paths. The task often happens outdoors or near traffic, so the work area matters as much as the tool.

Workers should review the product being used. Chalk, lime, marking powder, or other products may create dust or require specific handling precautions.

Dust should be controlled when filling, pouring, or using chalking material. Workers should avoid breathing dust and use respiratory protection when required.

The line chalker should be inspected before use. Wheels, handles, hopper, dispenser, controls, lids, and adjustment points should be in good condition.

Workers should watch footing while marking. Holes, curbs, slopes, mud, grass, gravel, and uneven pavement can cause trips or falls.

Traffic exposure should be controlled when marking parking lots, roads, drive lanes, athletic areas, or work zones. High-visibility clothing, cones, or spotters may be needed.

Workers should use good posture and avoid forcing the equipment. Pushing through rough surfaces or carrying heavy bags can create strains.

Safe line chalker use depends on product awareness, dust control, equipment inspection, good footing, and keeping workers visible when marking near moving vehicles or equipment.

Safety Reminders

  • Review the marking product before use.
  • Avoid breathing chalk or marking dust.
  • Use PPE when required.
  • Inspect the chalker before use.
  • Watch footing on uneven surfaces.
  • Use high-visibility clothing near traffic or equipment.
  • Control the work area with cones or spotters when needed.

Ask the Crew

  • What marking product is being used?
  • Could filling or marking create dust exposure?
  • Is the chalker in good working condition?
  • Are workers exposed to traffic, equipment, or pedestrians?
  • Are ground conditions safe for walking and pushing equipment?
