“Safe Use of Mezzanines”
Key Hazards
- Falls from mezzanine edges or openings
- Overloading mezzanine floors
- Materials falling to lower levels
- Unsafe use of gates or loading areas
- Trips on stairs, platforms, cords, or stored materials
- Workers below exposed to falling objects
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Mezzanines are useful for storage and work space, but they create hazards because people and materials are elevated above other work areas. Falls, falling objects, and overloading are major concerns.
Guardrails, gates, chains, and toe boards should be kept in place and used correctly. Open edges or loading gates should not be left unprotected when workers are nearby.
Load limits must be respected. Stored materials, pallets, equipment, and concentrated loads can exceed what the mezzanine is designed to support if workers are not careful.
Materials should be stored so they cannot roll, slide, tip, or fall from the mezzanine. Items near edges should be controlled, and unstable stacks should be corrected.
Stairs and access points should be kept clear. Boxes, tools, cords, shrink wrap, and debris can create trip hazards, especially when workers are carrying materials.
Loading areas require communication. Forklifts, pallet lifts, hoists, and workers on the mezzanine should coordinate movement before materials are placed or removed.
Workers below should be protected from falling objects. Areas beneath mezzanine work or loading may need to be controlled when material is being moved overhead.
Safe mezzanine use depends on respecting the height and structure. Control edges, manage loads, keep access clear, and prevent material from falling to the level below.
Safety Reminders
- Keep guardrails, chains, gates, and toe boards in place.
- Do not exceed mezzanine load limits.
- Store materials so they cannot fall or roll.
- Keep stairs and walkways clear.
- Use loading gates correctly.
- Communicate before moving materials on or off the mezzanine.
- Protect workers below from falling objects.
Ask the Crew
- Are guardrails and gates in place and being used correctly?
- Could stored material exceed the mezzanine load limit?
- Are any materials close enough to fall from the edge?
- Are stairs and access paths clear?
- Is anyone working or walking below overhead material movement?
