Key Hazards

  • Falls from unguarded or unstable scaffold platforms
  • Scaffold movement while workers are on the platform
  • Unlocked wheels or unstable floor surfaces
  • Overreaching from the scaffold instead of repositioning
  • Contact with overhead power lines or obstructions
  • Tools or materials falling from the platform

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Mobile scaffolds are useful for elevated work, but they must be set up, locked, and used correctly. Because they are designed to move, wheel control and surface conditions are critical.

The scaffold should be inspected before use. Platforms, guardrails, braces, frames, wheels, locks, pins, access points, and planks should be in safe condition.

Wheels or casters should be locked before workers climb or work from the scaffold. A scaffold that shifts unexpectedly can cause a fall.

The surface under the scaffold should be firm, level, and able to support the scaffold, workers, tools, and materials. Holes, slopes, debris, cords, and uneven floors can create instability.

Workers should use the proper access method to climb the scaffold. Climbing cross braces or frame components not designed for access can lead to falls.

Workers should not overreach from the platform. If the work cannot be reached safely, the scaffold should be moved and relocked.

Before moving a mobile scaffold, workers should remove or secure tools and materials and check for overhead obstructions, power lines, doorways, and people nearby.

Safe mobile scaffold use depends on inspection, locked wheels, stable surfaces, proper access, and keeping the work centered on the platform.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect the scaffold before use.
  • Lock wheels or casters before climbing or working.
  • Use guardrails where required.
  • Set up on firm, level, stable surfaces.
  • Use proper access; do not climb cross braces.
  • Move the scaffold instead of overreaching.
  • Check overhead hazards before moving or using the scaffold.

Ask the Crew

  • Has the mobile scaffold been inspected?
  • Are wheels locked before workers climb or work?
  • Is the surface stable and level?
  • Are guardrails, platforms, and braces in place?
  • Could overhead hazards or falling objects affect the work?
