“Safe Use of Pallet Lifters”
Key Hazards
- Loads falling or shifting from unstable pallets
- Pinch and crush points around forks, wheels, and lift mechanisms
- Foot injuries from wheels, forks, or dropped pallets
- Overloading beyond rated capacity
- Loss of control on slopes, ramps, or uneven floors
- Damaged pallets breaking during movement
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Pallet lifters help move heavy loads, but they can create serious hazards if the load is unstable, the pallet is damaged, or workers place hands and feet near pinch points.
Workers should inspect the pallet lifter before use. Forks, wheels, handles, controls, hydraulic components, brakes, and labels should be in good condition.
The load should be within the rated capacity of the lifter. Overloading can damage equipment, make steering difficult, or cause the load to drop.
Pallet condition matters. Broken boards, missing blocks, loose nails, cracked stringers, or unstable stacking can cause the pallet to fail during movement.
Forks should be inserted fully and evenly under the pallet. Poor fork placement can make the load unstable or damage the pallet.
Hands and feet should stay clear of forks, wheels, lift mechanisms, and pinch points while raising, lowering, or moving the load.
Travel paths should be checked before movement. Ramps, slopes, wet floors, gravel, thresholds, tight corners, and pedestrian traffic can affect control.
Safe pallet lifter use depends on inspection, load stability, pallet condition, clear travel paths, and keeping workers out of crush and pinch areas.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect pallet lifters before use.
- Do not exceed rated capacity.
- Check pallet condition before lifting.
- Insert forks fully and evenly.
- Keep hands and feet clear of forks and wheels.
- Move slowly around corners, ramps, and pedestrians.
- Lower loads safely before parking or leaving equipment.
Ask the Crew
- Is the pallet lifter in safe condition?
- Is the load within rated capacity?
- Is the pallet strong and stable enough to move?
- Are forks positioned correctly under the load?
- Are workers clear of pinch and crush points?
