Key Hazards
- Large panels tipping, sliding, or falling from carts
- Blocked visibility while moving sheet materials
- Pinch points between panels, carts, walls, racks, and doors
- Strains from loading or unloading heavy panels
- Loss of control on ramps, thresholds, or uneven floors
- Collisions with pedestrians, equipment, or stored materials
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Panel carts are useful for moving plywood, drywall, sheet metal, doors, glass, and other large flat materials, but the size of the load creates visibility and stability hazards.
Workers should inspect the cart before use. Wheels, frame, handles, supports, straps, brakes, and load surfaces should be in good condition.
The load should be centered and secured so panels cannot slide, tip, or fall. Tall or flexible panels may need additional control.
Workers should consider visibility before moving. Large panels can block the path ahead, so a spotter or different route may be needed.
Loading and unloading panels can create pinch points. Hands and fingers can be caught between panels, cart rails, walls, racks, doors, and floors.
Travel paths should be checked before moving the cart. Ramps, thresholds, doorways, cords, wet floors, uneven surfaces, and tight turns can cause loss of control.
Workers should move slowly and communicate near pedestrians, forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment.
Safe panel cart use depends on load stability, clear visibility, controlled movement, and keeping hands out of pinch points during loading, travel, and unloading.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect panel carts before use.
- Center and secure panels before moving.
- Use a spotter when visibility is blocked.
- Keep hands clear of pinch points.
- Check the travel path before moving.
- Use caution on ramps, thresholds, and tight turns.
- Move slowly near pedestrians and equipment.
Ask the Crew
- Is the panel cart in safe condition?
- Are panels centered and secured?
- Can the worker see the travel path?
- Where are the pinch points during loading and unloading?
- Are ramps, thresholds, or tight spaces part of the route?
