“Safe Use of Shop Vacuums”
Key Hazards
- Electrical shock from wet surfaces
- Clogs leading to overheating
- Debris becoming airborne during emptying
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Safe use of shop vacuums is important for workshops, construction sites, and maintenance operations. These vacuums handle dust, debris, and liquids, but improper use can introduce electrical or clogging hazards.
Workers should always verify whether the vacuum is rated for dry use, wet use, or both before they begin. Using a dry-only vacuum on wet surfaces can create shock hazards.
Different filter types—HEPA, foam, cartridge, or bag—are designed for specific materials. Using the wrong filter can cause dust blowouts or reduce suction.
Emptying the vacuum slowly and away from foot traffic reduces airborne dust and prevents slipping hazards caused by spilled debris.
Safety Reminders
- Check vacuum rating before use.
- Use the correct filter for the task.
- Avoid running vacuums on standing water unless rated for it.
- Empty debris carefully to prevent dust clouds.
Ask the Crew
- Do we need a HEPA filter for today’s cleanup?
- Are we using the correct vacuum for wet or dry debris?
