Key Hazards
- Pinched or crushed hands between driver handles, caps, and posts
- Muscle strain from repeated lifting and driving
- Posts falling, shifting, or leaning during setup
- Driver rebound from rocks, hard soil, or obstructions
- Striking underground utilities or shallow buried objects
- Eye, foot, or hand injuries from debris, slipping tools, or unstable footing
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Sign post drivers are simple but heavy tools. They require controlled lifting, good alignment, and constant attention to hand placement.
Workers should inspect the driver before use. Handles, welds, caps, grips, weight, and striking surfaces should be checked for cracks, sharp edges, or loose parts.
The post location should be reviewed before driving begins. Underground utilities, irrigation, lighting circuits, communication lines, and other buried objects may be present.
Posts should be aligned and stabilized before driving. A post that leans, twists, or slips can cause the driver to bind or strike the worker.
Hands should stay below pinch points and away from the top of the post. Workers should never place fingers where the driver can drop or trap them.
Soil conditions affect the task. Rocky, frozen, compacted, or uneven ground can cause rebound, sudden movement, or tool control problems.
Teamwork should be coordinated. If one worker is holding the post and another is driving, both workers need clear communication and agreed stopping points.
Safe sign post driver use depends on utility awareness, tool inspection, stable footing, controlled lifting, good communication, and stopping when the ground or post is not cooperating.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the post driver before use.
- Check for underground utility concerns before driving.
- Align and stabilize posts before striking.
- Keep hands clear of pinch points.
- Use controlled lifts instead of rushing.
- Watch for rebound in rocky or hard ground.
- Use communication during team post installation.
Ask the Crew
- Has the post location been checked for buried utilities?
- Is the post driver in good condition?
- Is the post aligned and stable?
- Where are hands during each strike?
- Are ground conditions making manual driving unsafe?
