Key Hazards
- Cuts from trimming nozzles or opening cartridges
- Punctures from cartridge tips, seal tools, or sharp applicators
- Skin or eye exposure to silicone, sealant, or solvents
- Hand, wrist, or forearm strain from repetitive squeezing
- Falls from overreaching while applying sealant
- Slips or contamination from spilled or smeared product
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Silicone guns and caulking guns are common tools, but the task can still create cut, chemical, strain, and fall hazards.
Workers should inspect the gun before use. Handles, trigger, plunger, release lever, frame, nozzle cutter, puncture rod, and cartridge holder should be in good condition.
Opening cartridges and trimming nozzles should be done carefully. Utility knives, built-in cutters, and puncture tools can injure hands if used with poor control.
Workers should review the product label before use. Silicone, caulk, adhesives, and sealants may require ventilation, gloves, eye protection, or skin cleanup precautions.
Repetitive squeezing can strain hands, wrists, and forearms. Workers should use smooth pressure, take breaks, and use powered or higher-leverage tools when needed.
Application at height should be done from proper access equipment. Workers should avoid overreaching from ladders, stools, platforms, or equipment.
Spills and smears should be cleaned up promptly. Sealants can create slip hazards, contaminate surfaces, or make tools hard to grip.
Safe silicone gun use depends on careful cartridge opening, product awareness, good hand position, safe access, and cleaning up product before it creates a hazard.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the silicone gun before use.
- Cut nozzles and open cartridges carefully.
- Review product labels for PPE and ventilation needs.
- Avoid skin and eye contact with sealants.
- Use controlled pressure and avoid repetitive strain.
- Use safe access when applying sealant at height.
- Clean up spills and smears promptly.
Ask the Crew
- Is the silicone gun in good condition?
- How will the cartridge be opened safely?
- Does the product require gloves, eye protection, or ventilation?
- Could repetitive squeezing create hand or wrist strain?
- Is the worker overreaching while applying sealant?
