2–3 Minute Talk Script
Sod cutters are powerful landscaping machines that cut below the grass surface. They can create serious hazards if the operator does not inspect the area, control the machine, and watch ground conditions.
Workers should inspect the sod cutter before use. Blades, guards, handles, throttle, drive controls, wheels, belts, fuel system, and shutoff controls should be checked.
The work area should be evaluated before cutting. Underground utilities, irrigation heads, shallow piping, wiring, roots, rocks, edging, and buried debris may be present.
Utility locating or site review should be completed when required before cutting begins. A sod cutter can damage shallow utilities or hidden systems.
Operators should maintain firm control and stable footing. Slopes, wet grass, mud, holes, curbs, and uneven ground can cause the machine to pull, slip, or tip.
Pedestrians, coworkers, pets, vehicles, windows, and property should be kept clear of the cutting area because debris can be thrown or the machine can move unexpectedly.
Noise, vibration, and physical effort should be managed. Hearing protection, gloves, breaks, and task rotation may be needed.
Safe sod cutter use depends on inspecting the equipment, checking the area, protecting underground utilities, controlling the machine, and stopping if the cutter strikes something unexpected.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the sod cutter before use.
- Check the work area for utilities, irrigation, rocks, roots, and debris.
- Use utility locating when required.
- Keep bystanders clear of the cutting area.
- Use caution on slopes, wet grass, and uneven ground.
- Wear PPE for noise, debris, vibration, and foot protection.
- Stop if the machine strikes something unexpected.
Ask the Crew
- Has the work area been checked for buried utilities or irrigation?
- Is the sod cutter in safe operating condition?
- Are slopes, wet areas, or uneven ground affecting control?
- Are pedestrians, vehicles, and property protected from debris?
- What PPE is needed for this cutting task?
