“Safe Use of Weed Trimmers”
Key Hazards
- Thrown rocks, glass, wire, sticks, or debris

2–3 Minute Talk Script
Weed trimmers can throw debris at high speed and expose workers to noise, vibration, sharp line contact, and uneven terrain. The area should be checked before trimming begins.
Workers should inspect the trimmer before use. Guards, handles, throttle, trigger, line head, battery, cord, fuel system, and shoulder strap should be in safe condition.
The work area should be cleared of rocks, wire, glass, cans, sticks, and other debris that could become projectiles.
Eye and face protection are important because trimmers can throw small objects farther than expected. Long pants, sturdy footwear, gloves, and hearing protection may also be needed.
Workers should keep hands, feet, and body parts away from the rotating line or cutting head. Adjustments should be made only when the trimmer is stopped and made safe.
Pedestrians, vehicles, windows, coworkers, and public areas should be kept clear of the discharge area. Work may need to pause when people enter the area.
Footing should be watched closely. Slopes, ditches, curbs, wet grass, mud, holes, and uneven ground can cause falls or loss of control.
Safe weed trimmer use depends on inspection, debris control, PPE, stable footing, and keeping others away from the cutting and discharge area.
