Key Hazards
- Strains from overloaded wheelbarrows
- Loss of control on slopes, ramps, or uneven ground
- Loads shifting, spilling, or tipping
- Pinched hands or fingers at handles and dumping points
- Trips from poor footing or blocked travel paths
- Reduced visibility while pushing large or high loads
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Wheelbarrows can reduce carrying, but they can also cause strains, spills, tip-overs, and loss of control when they are overloaded or used on poor surfaces.
The wheelbarrow should be inspected before use. Workers should check the tire, handles, tray, legs, axle, fasteners, and overall condition before loading it.
Loads should be sized so the worker can control the wheelbarrow. Heavy, wet, loose, or uneven loads can shift and make steering or stopping difficult.
The load should be balanced and kept low when possible. A high or uneven load can tip suddenly, especially on turns, slopes, ramps, or rough ground.
Workers should inspect the travel path before moving. Holes, rocks, cords, hoses, mud, ice, ramps, curbs, boards, and debris can cause loss of control.
Slopes and ramps require extra caution. A loaded wheelbarrow can pull the worker downhill or tip sideways if the route is too steep or uneven.
Dumping should be done with control. Workers should keep hands, feet, and legs clear of pinch points and avoid twisting or jerking while emptying the load.
Safe wheelbarrow use depends on manageable loads, stable footing, clear paths, and controlled movement. If the load cannot be controlled safely, reduce the load or use equipment.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the wheelbarrow before use.
- Do not overload the tray.
- Keep loads balanced and low when possible.
- Check the travel path before moving.
- Use caution on slopes, ramps, curbs, and uneven ground.
- Keep hands and feet clear while dumping.
- Reduce the load if control is difficult.
Ask the Crew
- Is the wheelbarrow in safe condition?
- Is the load too heavy, high, or uneven?
- Is the travel path clear and stable?
- Are slopes, ramps, or soft ground part of the route?
- Can the load be dumped without pinching, twisting, or losing control?
