“Safe Use of Winch Controls”
Key Hazards
- Cable snapback
- Crushed hands from tensioned lines
- Equipment shifting during pulls
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Safe use of winch controls is important for towing crews, utility workers, and maintenance teams. Winch lines store enormous tension and can recoil dangerously.
Workers should stand clear of the line-of-fire zone and avoid bending over the cable during tensioning.
Different winch lines—steel or synthetic—have different stretch and recoil characteristics.
Using smooth inputs on the controls prevents sudden jerks that can destabilize equipment.
Safety Reminders
- Stay out of the line of fire.
- Use smooth control inputs.
- Inspect cables for frays.
- Anchor loads securely.
Ask the Crew
- Is the load anchored properly?
- Do we need a snatch block for better control?
