Safe work around HVAC units is important for technicians, maintenance personnel, and construction workers. HVAC systems contain electrical components, sharp sheet metal, and hot surfaces that can cause injuries if not handled properly.
Workers should shut off power before opening panels and verify with a tester that circuits are de-energized. Wearing gloves helps prevent cuts from sheet metal edges, which are extremely sharp.
Different HVAC systems present different hazards. Rooftop units involve elevation risks, residential units involve cramped spaces, and industrial systems may include high-pressure refrigerant lines.
Workers should communicate during repairs or inspections and keep the work area clear of debris, particularly when working on rooftops or near ventilation openings.
