“Safe Work Around Moving Belts”
Key Hazards
- Entanglement in moving belts, rollers, or pulleys
- Pinch points between belts and rotating components
- Loose clothing, gloves, hair, or jewelry caught in equipment
- Workers cleaning or adjusting belts while running
- Missing or removed guards
- Unexpected startup during maintenance or clearing jams
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Moving belts can create serious caught-in and entanglement hazards. Conveyors, drive belts, rollers, pulleys, fans, and powered equipment can pull in clothing, gloves, hair, tools, or body parts quickly.
Workers should identify belt hazards before working nearby. The danger area may include the belt surface, nip points, rollers, pulleys, drive components, return belts, and tension points.
Guards should remain in place. A missing or removed guard can expose workers to moving parts that may not look dangerous until something is caught.
Loose clothing, jewelry, long hair, dangling badge lanyards, and gloves can become entanglement hazards. Workers should secure or remove items that could be caught.
Cleaning, adjusting, lubricating, or clearing jams should not be done on running equipment unless a specific approved procedure allows it. Lockout may be required before hands or tools enter the hazard area.
Workers should avoid reaching across or stepping over moving belts. A slip or sudden belt movement can pull a person into the equipment.
Tools and materials should be kept away from moving belts unless the task has been planned. Dropped items can be carried into pinch points or thrown from the equipment.
Safe work around moving belts depends on distance, guarding, and energy control. Stay clear while belts are running, and lock out equipment before maintenance or jam clearing when required.
Safety Reminders
- Stay clear of moving belts, rollers, and pulleys.
- Keep guards in place.
- Secure loose clothing, hair, jewelry, and lanyards.
- Do not clean or adjust belts while running unless approved.
- Use lockout procedures before maintenance or jam clearing.
- Do not reach across or step over moving belts.
- Report missing guards or unsafe belt conditions.
Ask the Crew
- Where are the nip points and entanglement hazards?
- Are guards in place and secure?
- Could clothing, gloves, hair, or jewelry get caught?
- Does this task require lockout before work begins?
- Are workers keeping tools and body parts away from moving belts?
