“Safe Work Around Sprinkler Heads”
Key Hazards
- Accidental sprinkler activation from impact or heat
- Damage to sprinkler heads, piping, or guards
- Stored materials blocking sprinkler coverage
- Ladders, lifts, or tools striking sprinkler components
- Hot work or temporary heat activating sprinkler heads
- Delayed reporting of damaged fire protection equipment
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Fire sprinkler heads are part of the building’s fire protection system and should be protected from damage, obstruction, and accidental activation. A small impact can create a major water release or reduce fire protection.
Workers should identify sprinkler heads and piping before moving ladders, lifts, materials, tools, carts, or equipment near ceilings and walls.
Sprinkler heads should not be used to hang items. Signs, cords, decorations, clothing, hoses, tools, or temporary supports can damage the head or interfere with operation.
Storage must not block sprinkler coverage. Materials stacked too high or too close to sprinkler heads can prevent water from reaching a fire effectively.
Heat sources should be controlled near sprinkler heads. Hot work, space heaters, heat guns, steam, temporary lighting, or other sources may activate a sprinkler if placed too close.
Workers using ladders or lifts should avoid striking sprinkler heads, cages, escutcheons, and piping. Extra caution is needed in tight rooms, storage areas, and mechanical spaces.
Any damaged, leaking, painted, corroded, or obstructed sprinkler head should be reported immediately. Workers should not ignore damage because the system still appears normal.
Safe work around sprinkler heads protects both the facility and the people inside it. Keep clearance, avoid impact, control heat, and report anything that could affect the fire protection system.
Safety Reminders
- Do not hang anything from sprinkler heads or piping.
- Keep storage below required sprinkler clearance.
- Use caution with ladders, lifts, carts, and long materials.
- Keep heat sources away from sprinkler heads.
- Report damaged, leaking, painted, or obstructed sprinkler heads.
- Do not block sprinkler coverage with stacked materials.
- Protect sprinkler components during overhead work.
Ask the Crew
- Are sprinkler heads or piping near the work area?
- Could ladders, lifts, tools, or materials strike sprinkler components?
- Is storage blocking sprinkler coverage?
- Could heat from the task activate a sprinkler head?
- Has any damaged or obstructed sprinkler equipment been reported?
