“Sharps and Blade Handling”
Key Hazards
- Cuts from dull or poorly controlled blades
- Injury from improper disposal
- Slip hazards caused by cut debris
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Sharps and blade handling safety is vital for workers who use utility knives, box cutters, or replacement blades in construction, warehousing, and maintenance tasks. Many injuries happen because blades are dull or workers rush through cutting tasks.
Workers should keep blades sharp, extend only the minimum blade length needed, and always cut away from the body. Using gloves designed for cut protection adds a layer of safety, especially when handling materials such as plastic strapping, carpet, or packaging.
Different workplaces face unique hazards. Warehouse staff open boxes for stocking, construction workers cut building materials, and maintenance teams trim hoses, belts, or packaging. Each environment requires attention to both the tool and the material being cut.
Workers should dispose of used blades in proper containers and avoid leaving blades in work areas. Good blade management prevents cuts, punctures, and debris-related slips.
Safety Reminders
- Use sharp blades to prevent slips.
- Cut away from the body.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves.
- Dispose of used blades properly.
Ask the Crew
- Are we using the correct blades for today’s materials?
- Do we need more blade disposal containers on site?
