2–3 Minute Talk Script

Sidewalk and curb repair takes place where the public normally expects a clear walking route. The crew should establish a protected work area and an accessible detour before demolition, excavation, or placement begins.

Barriers, signs, detectable channelizing devices, ramps, and alternate routes should be installed according to the approved plan. The route should not direct pedestrians into traffic, equipment paths, unstable ground, or other hazards.

When work is adjacent to a roadway, workers should remain aware of passing traffic, parked vehicles, opening doors, and construction equipment. Materials and tools should not extend into a travel lane or narrow the pedestrian route unexpectedly.

Concrete saws, breakers, and removal equipment can create silica-containing dust, noise, vibration, and flying fragments. Wet methods, ventilation, guarding, suitable PPE, and other required controls should be used and maintained.

Concrete slabs, curb sections, forms, and bags of material can be heavy and awkward. Mechanical assistance, team handling, smaller pieces, and planned staging should be used to reduce strain and prevent hands or feet from being trapped.

Wet concrete can cause skin and eye burns. Workers should prevent concrete from entering boots or gloves, use suitable protective clothing, and wash contaminated skin promptly using the site's approved method.

Open excavations, removed slabs, protruding stakes, forms, cords, hoses, and uneven surfaces should remain guarded and clearly identified. The crew should inspect the detour and work-zone boundary throughout the job, especially after equipment or deliveries move.

Before the area is reopened, the surface, joints, curb edge, backfill, and surrounding walking route should be stable. Temporary protection should remain until the concrete and site conditions are ready for public use.
