Skylight and Roof Opening Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
Before rooftop work begins, every skylight, smoke vent, hatch, penetration, and temporary opening should be located and included in the fall-protection plan.
Skylights and roof openings should be protected by guardrails, screens, covers, personal fall protection, or another approved system suitable for the opening and task.
Workers should not assume a skylight dome or translucent panel can support body weight unless it is specifically designed and verified for that purpose.
Covers should be secured, identified, and maintained so wind, workers, material movement, or equipment cannot displace them.
Access routes and material staging should keep workers and carts away from openings, especially where visibility is reduced by glare, darkness, snow, or stored material.
Tools, fasteners, and debris should be controlled so they do not fall through openings, and workers below should be restricted from exposed areas.
Work should stop when an opening is unprotected, a cover is damaged or loose, a skylight's strength is uncertain, or the planned work requires removing protection without an alternate system.
