Spotter communication helps drivers move safely when visibility is limited, but it only works when the driver and spotter use clear signals and safe positions.
Before movement begins, the driver and spotter should agree on hand signals, radio calls, stop commands, travel path, and final stopping point.
Only one primary spotter should direct the driver unless the crew has a specific plan for multiple spotters.
The spotter should remain visible to the driver. If visual contact is lost, the driver should stop immediately.
Spotters should stand where they can see the hazard and be seen by the driver without standing between the vehicle and a fixed object.
Radios should be tested before use when radio communication is needed. Messages should be short, clear, and confirmed when necessary.
The spotter should watch for pedestrians, equipment, overhead hazards, tight clearances, drop-offs, and changing conditions around the vehicle.
Safe vehicle spotter communication depends on one clear signal source, agreed stop commands, visual contact, safe spotter positioning, and stopping immediately when communication becomes unclear.
