2–3 Minute Talk Script
Street sweepers operate close to curbs, parked vehicles, traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists while the operator monitors brushes, debris flow, water systems, and roadway conditions. A complete pre-trip inspection is necessary before the route begins.
Mirrors, cameras, alarms, lights, brakes, steering, tires, brushes, suction systems, water spray, doors, latches, and hopper controls should be checked. Dirty windows, failed cameras, and damaged warning devices can make an already limited view worse.
The operator should maintain a controlled speed and scan ahead for parked vehicles, open doors, people stepping from between cars, cyclists, animals, low branches, signs, utility structures, and roadway defects.
Rotating brushes and vacuum systems can throw stones, glass, metal, and other debris. Workers and the public should remain clear of the operating side, and dust-suppression systems should be used when required and effective.
Backing should be avoided when possible. Before reversing, the operator should check the path, use mirrors and cameras, and use a spotter when visibility is not adequate. No worker should approach the rear of the machine until the operator confirms it is stopped and secured.
Hopper dumping should occur on stable, level ground with adequate overhead and side clearance. Workers should stay clear of the raised hopper, tailgate, discharge area, and any path where debris can shift or fall.
Brush replacement, blockage removal, pressure washing, cleaning, and repair can expose workers to rotating equipment, hydraulics, gravity, and contaminated debris. The sweeper should be parked, secured, isolated, and blocked as required before access.
Needles, glass, chemicals, animal waste, and other unknown material may be collected. Workers should avoid direct contact, use suitable PPE and tools, and report unusual or hazardous material rather than handling it as ordinary street debris.
