“Tow Strap Safety”
Key Hazards
- Tow strap failure under tension
- Struck-by injuries from snapping hardware
- Vehicle instability during towing operations
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Tow strap safety is important for utility crews, contractors, municipal workers, and off-road operators performing vehicle recovery or towing operations. Tow straps store significant energy under tension and can become deadly if they fail.
Workers should inspect straps, hooks, and connection points before use. Damaged straps with cuts, fraying, or worn stitching should be removed from service immediately.
Different recovery situations create different hazards. Utility crews may pull vehicles from muddy shoulders, construction teams recover equipment from soft ground, and maintenance crews tow disabled fleet vehicles.
Workers should remain clear of tensioned straps and never stand between vehicles during towing. Slow, controlled movement reduces strain and improves safety during recovery operations.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect tow straps before use.
- Keep workers clear of tensioned straps.
- Use rated attachment points only.
- Perform towing operations slowly and carefully.
Ask the Crew
- Are our tow straps inspected and rated properly?
- Do workers understand safe positioning during towing?
