“Trailer Tongue Weight Awareness”
Key Hazards
- Trailer sway from too little tongue weight
- Poor steering control from too much tongue weight
- Reduced braking stability during towing
- Load shifting during travel
- Hitch, coupler, or tow vehicle overloaded
- Drivers failing to inspect load balance before departure
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Trailer tongue weight affects how the tow vehicle and trailer handle on the road. A trailer can be connected correctly and still be unsafe if the load is balanced poorly.
Too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway, especially at highway speeds, during wind, or when passing large vehicles.
Too much tongue weight can overload the rear of the tow vehicle, reduce steering control, affect headlights, and strain hitch components.
Loads should be positioned so weight is distributed correctly for the trailer, hitch, and tow vehicle. Workers should follow manufacturer and company guidance.
Cargo should be secured so it cannot shift and change tongue weight during travel.
The hitch, ball, coupler, receiver, safety chains, tires, and vehicle rating should match the trailer and load.
Drivers should watch for signs of poor balance, including sway, bouncing, poor steering, sagging, or unusual braking behavior.
Safe trailer tongue weight control depends on correct load placement, securement, capacity awareness, pre-trip inspection, and stopping to adjust the load if towing behavior feels unsafe.
Safety Reminders
- Consider tongue weight before towing.
- Avoid loading too much weight behind the trailer axle.
- Avoid overloading the tongue or tow vehicle.
- Secure cargo so it cannot shift.
- Check hitch, coupler, ball, chains, and ratings.
- Watch for sway, sagging, bouncing, or poor steering.
- Stop and correct load balance if towing feels unstable.
Ask the Crew
- Is the trailer load balanced correctly?
- Could too little tongue weight cause sway?
- Could too much tongue weight affect steering or hitch capacity?
- Is the cargo secured against shifting?
- Does the tow vehicle and hitch rating match the load?
