“Trailer Tongue Weight Awareness”
Key Hazards
- Trailer sway caused by improper load balance
- Loss of steering control from excessive tongue weight
- Trailer separation or instability during transport
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Trailer tongue weight awareness is important for utility crews, contractors, landscapers, and municipal workers towing equipment or materials. Improper tongue weight can reduce steering control, increase trailer sway, and create dangerous towing conditions.
Too little tongue weight can cause trailers to fishtail or sway at higher speeds, while too much tongue weight can overload the rear axle of the towing vehicle and reduce braking or steering effectiveness.
Different operations transport different types of loads. Utility crews may tow pumps or generators, construction teams haul equipment and materials, and municipal departments move signs, barricades, or maintenance supplies.
Workers should distribute loads evenly and follow trailer manufacturer guidelines whenever possible. Drivers should stop immediately if trailer sway or unstable handling develops during transport.
Safety Reminders
- Distribute trailer loads evenly.
- Avoid overloading the front or rear of trailers.
- Stop immediately if trailer sway develops.
- Inspect hitches and securement before travel.
Ask the Crew
- Are today’s trailer loads balanced properly?
- Have operators experienced trailer sway issues recently?
