Drone equipment is often transported between jobsites, and the trip can create battery, cargo, and equipment hazards before the aircraft ever reaches the launch area.
Batteries should be inspected before transport. Swollen, punctured, leaking, overheated, recalled, or impact-damaged batteries should not be placed into a normal case with serviceable equipment.
Battery terminals should be protected from short circuits using approved covers, individual compartments, original packaging, or other suitable methods. Loose tools, hardware, keys, and metal objects should be kept away from exposed contacts.
Drones, controllers, batteries, chargers, and accessories should be secured against movement, crushing, moisture, and vibration. Cases should not be placed where they can become projectiles during sudden stops or collisions.
Vehicles can become dangerously hot. Batteries should not be left in direct sunlight, near heaters, or inside hot enclosed vehicles beyond their approved storage limits.
Air travel has specific rules for drones and lithium batteries. Spare lithium batteries are generally carried in the passenger cabin with terminals protected, and battery size or quantity may require airline approval or may be prohibited.
Shipping lithium batteries is different from carrying personal equipment and may trigger hazardous-material packaging, marking, documentation, and training requirements. Workers should not improvise a shipment.
The person arranging transport should confirm current carrier, airline, company, and regulatory requirements before departure because battery type, watt-hour rating, condition, and mode of transportation affect what is allowed.
