Key Hazards

  • Cave-ins or soil movement around the trench box
  • Workers outside the protected area of the shield
  • Improper trench box placement, depth, or configuration
  • Spoil piles, equipment, or materials too close to trench edges
  • Crush hazards during trench box installation or removal
  • Unsafe access, egress, or work practices inside the trench

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Trench boxes are designed to protect workers from cave-ins while they work inside the shielded area. They must be installed, used, and moved correctly.

A competent person should evaluate the excavation, soil conditions, trench depth, water, surcharge loads, and protective system requirements before workers enter.

Workers should stay inside the protected area of the trench box. A trench box does not protect workers standing outside the shield or between the box and trench wall.

The trench box should be set according to manufacturer tabulated data and site requirements. Depth limits, spreaders, pins, damage, and allowed configurations matter.

Safe access and egress should be provided. Ladders or other access points should be located so workers can enter and exit without climbing on the shield improperly.

Spoil piles, pipe, tools, trucks, and heavy equipment should be kept back from trench edges to reduce collapse and falling-object hazards.

Workers should stay clear when trench boxes are lifted, lowered, dragged, or repositioned. Rigging, equipment, and moving shields create crush and struck-by hazards.

Safe trench box use depends on competent-person oversight, correct installation, workers staying inside the protected zone, safe access, and stopping work if conditions change.

Safety Reminders

  • Use trench boxes under competent-person direction.
  • Stay inside the protected area of the shield.
  • Follow manufacturer tabulated data and site requirements.
  • Provide safe access and egress.
  • Keep spoil piles and equipment back from trench edges.
  • Stay clear during box movement or installation.
  • Stop work if soil, water, or trench conditions change.

Ask the Crew

  • Has a competent person evaluated the excavation?
  • Is the trench box installed according to requirements?
  • Are workers staying inside the protected zone?
  • Is access and egress safe?
  • Are spoil piles, equipment, and materials kept back from the edge?
