Key Hazards
- Damaged rack uprights, beams, braces, or anchors
- Overloaded or unevenly loaded racks
- Unstable pallets or materials stored overhead
- Forklift or pallet jack impacts
- Falling objects from elevated storage
- Blocked aisles, exits, or emergency access
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Warehouse racks can store heavy materials overhead, so rack condition and loading practices matter. A damaged or overloaded rack can fail without much warning and injure workers nearby.
Workers should look for rack damage during normal warehouse activity. Bent uprights, cracked welds, damaged beams, missing anchors, loose braces, leaning sections, and impact marks should be reported.
Forklifts and pallet jacks are common sources of rack damage. Even a small impact can reduce the strength of the rack, especially if damage is repeated or left unrepaired.
Loads should be stored within the rack’s rated capacity. Heavy items should generally be placed lower, and pallets should be fully supported by the beams.
Pallet condition matters. Broken boards, leaning loads, loose wrap, overhanging material, or unstable stacked items increase the chance of materials falling.
Aisles should remain clear so workers and equipment can move safely. Materials stored in travel paths can create trip hazards, struck-by hazards, and blocked emergency access.
Workers should never climb warehouse racks to reach material. Approved ladders, lifts, or order-picking equipment should be used when items cannot be reached safely.
Safe warehouse rack use depends on inspection and reporting. Keep loads stable, protect racks from impact, maintain aisle clearance, and remove unsafe storage conditions before they cause an incident.
Safety Reminders
- Report bent, leaning, cracked, or damaged racks.
- Do not overload rack systems.
- Store heavy materials lower when possible.
- Keep pallets stable and fully supported.
- Protect racks from forklift and pallet jack impacts.
- Keep aisles, exits, and emergency access clear.
- Do not climb warehouse racks.
Ask the Crew
- Are any racks bent, leaning, damaged, or missing anchors?
- Are loads within rack capacity?
- Are pallets stable and fully supported?
- Could any material fall into an aisle or work area?
- Are aisles and emergency access routes clear?
