Water sampling from a boat combines navigation, balance, equipment handling, and possible exposure to contaminated water. The sampling plan should address both the quality of the sample and the safety of the crew.
The operator should position and control the boat before sampling begins. Anchoring, idling, drifting, or holding station should be selected based on current, depth, traffic, wind, structures, and the effect of propulsion on the sample.
The sampler should work from a stable position and avoid leaning beyond the boat's support. Sampling poles, bottles, pumps, and lines should be long enough for the task without requiring unsafe reaching.
The operator and sampler should agree on commands for start, stop, repositioning, line deployment, and emergency interruption. The operator should not maneuver unexpectedly while the sampler is handling equipment over the side.
Hoses, ropes, cables, and weighted devices should be kept clear of the propeller, steering, controls, feet, and loose equipment. No worker should wrap a sampling line around the hand or body.
PPE should match the potential water hazard and preservatives being used. Gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, flotation, and hygiene controls may be needed for wastewater, harmful algae, chemicals, biological contaminants, or unknown water quality.
Sample bottles, preservatives, coolers, ice, and instruments should be secured before the boat moves. Broken glass, leaking preservatives, spilled ice, and open coolers can create cuts, chemical exposure, and slip hazards.
If current, wake, weather, boat movement, contamination, or equipment problems prevent safe sampling, the crew should reposition or stop. A sample is not worth a fall overboard, propeller entanglement, or uncontrolled exposure.
