“Work Zone Awareness”
Key Hazards
- Equipment movement near pedestrians
- Passing vehicles entering work areas
- Confusion due to poor signage or communication
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Work zone awareness is essential for construction workers, utility crews, and municipal road teams. Active work zones bring together moving vehicles, equipment, pedestrians, and changing conditions. Clear communication and situational awareness prevent serious incidents.
Workers should stay within designated work areas and avoid stepping into vehicle paths unexpectedly. Equipment operators have limited visibility, especially when backing or carrying large loads. Pedestrians must make eye contact with operators before crossing paths.
Different work zones pose unique risks. Road crews must manage passing traffic, utility teams often set up near intersections, and construction workers may operate equipment within tight spaces surrounded by materials and structures.
Daily discussions about work zone layout, equipment staging, and pedestrian routes help maintain safety. Workers should report unclear signage, blind spots, or shifting traffic patterns immediately.
Safety Reminders
- Stay within designated work areas.
- Communicate with equipment operators before approaching.
- Use proper signage and barriers.
- Monitor traffic flow and adjust the work zone as needed.
Ask the Crew
- Where are our highest-risk areas within today’s work zone?
- Do we need additional signage or barriers?
