2–3 Minute Talk Script

A boat's safe capacity includes more than the number of people aboard. Crew, tools, batteries, fuel, coolers, sampling equipment, anchors, and other materials all add weight and affect stability.

The operator should know the vessel's capacity information and company limits before loading. The crew should not estimate capacity by whether there appears to be enough open deck space.

Weight should be distributed to keep the boat level and maintain adequate freeboard. Concentrating heavy equipment at the bow, stern, or one side can change handling and allow water to enter more easily.

Heavy items should be placed low and secured against movement. A load that shifts during a turn, wake crossing, sudden stop, or worker movement can change the center of gravity quickly.

Passengers should follow the operator's instructions about seating and movement. Standing, leaning over the side, gathering on one side, or changing positions during a maneuver can destabilize a small boat.

Water, mud, ice, or collected rain inside the boat also adds weight and may move freely as the boat turns. Bilge and drainage systems should be monitored, and unexpected water accumulation should be treated as a warning condition.

A heavily loaded boat may accelerate, steer, turn, and stop differently. Wind, current, wake, and waves that are manageable with a light load may become hazardous when the boat is near its operational limit.

When the load cannot be distributed safely or the conditions are not suitable for the planned weight, the mission should be split, equipment reduced, or a more capable vessel used.
