2–3 Minute Talk Script
The confined space attendant has a critical safety role. The attendant monitors the entry from outside the space and helps protect entrants from hazards that may change during the job.
The attendant should know who is inside the space, what work is being performed, what hazards are present, and what conditions require evacuation.
Communication with entrants must be maintained throughout the entry. Radios, voice, hand signals, retrieval lines, or other methods should be understood before entry begins.
The attendant should monitor conditions outside and inside the space as required. This may include gas monitor readings, ventilation, work activity, weather, traffic, or nearby operations.
Entry control is part of the attendant’s job. Unauthorized workers should not be allowed to enter the space or interfere with the entry setup.
The attendant should not leave the post while entrants are inside unless properly relieved by another qualified attendant.
In an emergency, the attendant should call for help and follow the rescue plan. The attendant should not enter the space for an unplanned rescue unless trained, equipped, and authorized under the rescue procedure.
Safe confined space entry depends on a focused attendant who understands the hazards, maintains communication, controls entry, and acts quickly when conditions become unsafe.
