Key Hazards
- Vehicle crashes from speed, distraction, or poor following distance
- Backing incidents in parking lots, job sites, and driveways
- Unreported vehicle defects affecting safe operation
- Cargo, tools, or equipment shifting during travel
- Drivers rushing between jobs or taking unnecessary risks
- Poor visibility from mirrors, weather, lighting, or blind spots
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Fleet driving is part of the job, but it is also one of the highest-risk activities many workers perform each day.
Drivers should complete a basic vehicle check before driving. Tires, lights, mirrors, brakes, horn, wipers, fluids, backup alarms, cargo, and visible damage should be reviewed.
Seat belts should be worn by the driver and all passengers whenever the vehicle is moving.
Drivers should use defensive driving habits. This includes scanning ahead, watching intersections, managing speed, leaving following distance, and expecting other drivers to make mistakes.
Distractions should be controlled before the vehicle moves. Phones, tablets, radios, paperwork, food, and route changes should not pull attention away from driving.
Backing should be minimized when possible. When backing is necessary, drivers should check behind the vehicle, use mirrors and cameras, move slowly, and use a spotter when visibility is limited.
Tools, materials, chemicals, cones, ladders, and equipment should be secured so they cannot shift, fall, or become projectiles.
Safe fleet driving depends on inspection, patience, seat belt use, defensive driving, distraction control, cargo securement, and reporting unsafe vehicle conditions before they cause an incident.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the vehicle before driving.
- Wear seat belts every trip.
- Control speed and following distance.
- Avoid phone and device distractions.
- Secure tools, cargo, and equipment.
- Use extra caution when backing.
- Report defects, damage, or unsafe vehicle conditions.
Ask the Crew
- Has the vehicle been inspected before use?
- Are tools, materials, and cargo secured?
- What distractions need to be controlled before driving?
- Can backing be avoided or done with a spotter?
- Are drivers allowing enough speed control and following distance?
