“Fueling Portable Equipment”
Key Hazards
- Fuel vapors igniting near hot engines
- Fuel spills creating fire hazards
- Improper fuel container handling
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Fueling portable equipment safely is important for utility crews, contractors, landscapers, and maintenance workers using generators, pumps, chainsaws, or other gas-powered equipment. Fuel vapors can ignite quickly if equipment is hot or fueling is performed carelessly.
Workers should shut equipment off and allow engines to cool before refueling whenever possible. Fuel containers should remain approved, labeled, and stored securely during transport.
Different operations fuel different equipment types. Utility crews may refuel portable pumps or generators, landscaping crews fuel handheld equipment, and construction teams often refuel saws or compactors throughout the day.
Fuel spills should be cleaned immediately, and ignition sources must remain clear of fueling areas. Proper fueling procedures help prevent fires, burns, and environmental contamination.
Safety Reminders
- Allow hot equipment to cool before fueling.
- Use approved fuel containers only.
- Clean spills immediately.
- Keep ignition sources away from fueling areas.
Ask the Crew
- Are approved fuel containers being used today?
- Do fueling areas remain clear of ignition hazards?
