Key Hazards

  • Sparks or heat igniting combustibles
  • Flammable vapors, gases, dust, or residues in the work area
  • Hot work performed without required permit review
  • Fire watch not assigned or ended too early
  • Poor ventilation or smoke exposure
  • Nearby equipment, walls, floors, or hidden spaces catching fire

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Hot work permits help control fire risk before welding, cutting, grinding, brazing, soldering, or other spark-producing work begins.

The permit process should verify that the area has been inspected and that hazards are controlled before work starts.

Combustible materials should be removed, covered, or protected. Sparks can travel farther than expected and can fall through cracks, grating, drains, or wall openings.

Flammable liquids, gases, vapors, dust, and residues should be identified and controlled. Gas testing may be required in some areas.

Fire extinguishers or other fire protection equipment should be available and ready for use.

A fire watch may be required during and after hot work. The fire watch should understand the area, hazards, emergency response, and required watch duration.

Ventilation should be considered when smoke, fumes, or gases may build up during hot work.

Safe hot work permitting depends on inspecting the area, controlling combustibles, assigning fire watch when required, and closing the permit only after the area is safe.

Safety Reminders

  • Complete the hot work permit before work begins.
  • Remove or protect combustibles.
  • Check for flammable vapors, gases, dust, and residues.
  • Keep fire extinguishers available.
  • Assign fire watch when required.
  • Control sparks through openings, cracks, and grating.
  • Close out the permit only after final area checks are complete.

Ask the Crew

  • Is a hot work permit required for this task?
  • What combustibles are nearby?
  • Could sparks travel to hidden areas?
  • Is fire watch required and assigned?
  • What must be checked before the permit is closed?
