Hydraulic presses can generate tremendous force with relatively quiet and controlled movement. The absence of high speed or loud noise does not reduce the severity of the crushing hazard.
The point of operation should be protected by suitable guarding or safeguarding for the machine, tooling, workpiece, and task. Hands and body parts should remain outside the ram, platen, die, and fixture danger zones.
Workpieces, dies, supports, blocks, fixtures, and press accessories should be designed and rated for the load and aligned correctly. Improvised supports or off-center loading can shift, break, or eject material.
Hydraulic systems can retain pressure after the motor is stopped. Accumulators, cylinders, hoses, valves, trapped fluid, raised components, and loaded tooling may continue to store energy.
A raised ram, platen, head, or attached load should be supported by approved mechanical blocks, pins, or restraints before workers enter beneath or between components. Hydraulic pressure alone should not be treated as support.
Workers should never use a hand to search for a hydraulic leak. High-pressure fluid can penetrate skin through a small opening and requires urgent medical attention.
Inspection, die work, cleaning, repair, hose replacement, and other servicing should follow the equipment-specific hazardous-energy procedure, including pressure release, blocking, and verification.
The press should be stopped for leaking hoses, damaged fittings, drifting cylinders, unstable tooling, unusual noise, pressure problems, safeguard failure, or unexpected movement.

- Use rated tooling, supports, blocks, and fixtures.
- Treat hydraulic systems as pressurized until verified otherwise.
- Mechanically block raised components before entry.
- Never search for hydraulic leaks with a hand.
- Release, isolate, block, and verify energy during service.
- Report leaks, drift, damaged hoses, or unstable tooling.

- How is the point of operation safeguarded?
- Are the workpiece, tooling, and supports rated and aligned?
- What hydraulic or gravity energy remains after shutdown?
- How will raised components be positively blocked?
- What signs indicate a leak, drift, or system failure?
