2–3 Minute Talk Script
Machine changeover places workers closer to tooling, fixtures, guards, controls, and moving components than normal production. A familiar setup can still create serious hazards when steps are skipped or responsibilities are unclear.
The changeover should have a defined procedure, assigned roles, required tools, lifting methods, and communication plan. Workers should know who controls the machine and who has authority to begin testing or restart.
Hazardous energy should be controlled whenever the task exposes workers to unexpected startup, movement, or energy release. Electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, spring, gravity, and thermal sources should all be considered.
Dies, molds, fixtures, rolls, heads, blades, and other heavy components should be supported and handled with suitable lifting equipment. Hands and body parts should remain out of areas where a component could shift, settle, rotate, or fall.
Alignment pins, blocks, stops, fasteners, clamps, hoses, electrical connections, sensors, and tooling should be installed and verified according to the setup requirements. Improvised hardware or temporary positioning can fail during the first cycle.
Guards, covers, interlocks, scanners, and other safeguards should be restored and tested after the setup. A safeguard that worked for the previous product may not protect the new configuration unless it is adjusted correctly.
Initial test cycles should be controlled. Workers should stand clear, use approved reduced-speed or single-cycle functions when available, and watch for interference, abnormal movement, leaks, vibration, noise, or unstable material.
The machine should not return to production until tools and temporary devices are removed, fasteners and connections verified, guards restored, affected workers notified, and the setup formally released.
