2–3 Minute Talk Script

An industrial robot system includes more than the robot arm. End effectors, fixtures, conveyors, sensors, controls, tooling, parts, and connected equipment can all move or release energy within the automation cell.

The robot work envelope and restricted space should be protected by the designed combination of perimeter fencing, gates, interlocks, scanners, mats, barriers, and control functions. Workers should not reach through or bypass these protections.

Automatic equipment can move without the warning cues associated with a human operator. A robot may pause because of a sensor or process condition and then resume when that condition changes.

Only trained and authorized personnel should enter the cell or use teach, manual, maintenance, or recovery modes. The required mode, speed limitation, enabling device, communication, and escape path should be understood before work begins.

Cell entry for cleaning, jam clearing, repair, setup, or other exposure should follow the site's hazardous-energy procedure. Control-system stops, software commands, and interlocked gates should not be assumed to isolate every energy source.

End effectors and carried parts can create additional hazards. Grippers may open, vacuum may be lost, weld guns may close, stored pressure may release, and fixtures may move even when the robot arm appears stationary.

Before restart, workers should leave the restricted area, guards and gates should be restored, tools and temporary equipment removed, and affected personnel notified. The restart should be controlled so unexpected motion does not surprise anyone.

Any damaged fence, gate, interlock, scanner, enabling device, emergency stop, or control function should remove the cell from normal service until qualified personnel correct and verify the condition.
