Metalworking fluids and coolants reduce heat and friction, carry away chips, and protect tools and parts. Exposure can occur through mist, splash, skin contact, contaminated surfaces, and leaking equipment.

Machines should use enclosures, local exhaust, mist collection, splash guards, and other controls as designed. Doors and covers should remain closed when they are needed to contain aerosol and fluid.

Workers should avoid placing hands repeatedly in coolant or wearing clothing and gloves saturated with fluid. Skin should be washed using suitable products, and solvents or harsh cleaners should not be used on the body.

Eye and face protection should match the splash and chip hazard. Pressurized coolant lines, broken hoses, open doors, tool changes, and cleaning can release fluid unexpectedly.

Fluid condition should be monitored according to the facility's program. Incorrect concentration, tramp oil, metal fines, process contamination, and microbial growth can affect performance, odor, corrosion, and worker exposure.

Coolant should be mixed and added using approved products, concentrations, containers, and procedures. Chemicals should not be combined or treated with additives unless the process has been reviewed and authorized.

Leaks and spills should be contained and cleaned promptly. Wet floors, hoses, pans, and fluid-coated machine surfaces can create slip and contact hazards and may indicate a maintenance problem.

Workers should report persistent mist, strong or changing odors, skin rash, breathing irritation, repeated leaks, or fluid that appears abnormal. Early reporting allows the process, ventilation, fluid, and health concern to be evaluated.
