Salt and brine operations often begin before or during severe weather, when yards are congested, surfaces are slippery, and crews are under time pressure. The loading and spreading plan should identify chemical products, equipment flow, communication, PPE, and spill controls.
Salt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and other treatment products can irritate skin and eyes and may affect breathing when dust or mist is generated. Workers should review labels and safety data sheets and use the required eye, face, skin, and respiratory protection.
Loading areas should have controlled traffic patterns for loaders, trucks, and workers on foot. Workers should stay out of loader blind spots, avoid walking beneath raised buckets, and use clear signals before approaching a truck.
Conveyors, augers, spinners, chains, and feed mechanisms can pull in clothing, gloves, tools, and body parts. Guards should remain in place, and blockage removal or maintenance should occur only after the equipment is stopped, isolated, and verified according to the energy-control procedure.
Brine tanks, pumps, hoses, valves, and fittings should be inspected for leaks, damage, and secure connections. Pressure should be relieved before opening lines, and workers should stay out of the spray path during transfer and testing.
Salt and brine can make floors, platforms, steps, ladders, and vehicle access points slippery. Accumulation and spills should be cleaned promptly, and footwear should provide suitable traction for the conditions.
During spreading, the driver should account for snow, ice, traffic, reduced visibility, changing road friction, overhead obstructions, and the altered handling caused by a loaded body or liquid tank. Spreader settings should be adjusted only by approved methods.
After the event, equipment should be cleaned, inspected for corrosion and damage, and parked safely. Wash water, spilled product, and residual chemicals should be managed according to the facility's environmental and housekeeping procedures.
