Key Hazards
- Fire or explosion from flammable vapors
- Storage near heat, sparks, flames, or electrical hazards
- Using unapproved, damaged, or unlabeled containers
- Vapor buildup in poorly ventilated areas
- Spills spreading to drains, equipment, or ignition sources
- Incompatible chemicals stored near flammable liquids
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Flammable liquids can release vapors that ignite easily. Safe storage is important because fire risk exists even when the liquid is not actively being used.
Flammable liquids should be stored in approved containers or cabinets when required. Containers should be compatible, closed when not in use, labeled, and kept in good condition.
Ignition sources must be controlled around storage areas. Smoking, open flames, welding, grinding, heaters, hot surfaces, electrical sparks, and static electricity can ignite vapors.
Ventilation matters because vapors can accumulate in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Storage areas should be suitable for the type and quantity of liquids being stored.
Containers should not be overfilled, damaged, leaking, corroded, or missing caps. Any container showing signs of swelling, rust, residue, or leakage should be reported and handled according to procedure.
Flammable liquids should be separated from incompatible chemicals such as oxidizers and other reactive materials. Poor segregation can increase fire or reaction hazards.
Spill control should be available and understood. Workers should know how to report spills, keep liquids away from drains, and use absorbents or containment when trained to do so.
Safe flammable liquid storage depends on organization and discipline. Keep containers closed, labeled, separated, protected from ignition sources, and stored only where they belong.
Safety Reminders
- Store flammable liquids in approved containers or cabinets.
- Keep containers closed when not in use.
- Keep storage areas away from ignition sources.
- Maintain labels on all containers.
- Inspect containers for leaks, damage, corrosion, or residue.
- Separate flammables from incompatible chemicals.
- Know the spill response procedure.
Ask the Crew
- Are flammable liquids stored in approved containers or cabinets?
- Are containers labeled, closed, and in good condition?
- Are ignition sources controlled near the storage area?
- Is ventilation adequate for the storage location?
- Are spill supplies and reporting procedures understood?
