Key Hazards
- Tractor rollover on slopes, ditches, or uneven ground
- Workers struck by tractors, attachments, or implements
- Entanglement in PTO shafts or rotating parts
- Blind spots around attachments and rear movement
- Falls while mounting or dismounting
- Traffic exposure during roadway travel or roadside work
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Tractors are powerful machines that can create serious hazards if operated too fast, used on unstable ground, or handled without awareness of attachments and surroundings.
Operators should inspect the tractor before use. Tires, brakes, steering, lights, mirrors, hitch points, hydraulics, guards, seat belts, rollover protection, and attachments should be checked.
Rollover risk is one of the most serious tractor hazards. Slopes, ditches, soft shoulders, holes, uneven ground, raised loads, and sharp turns can all increase rollover potential.
Seat belts should be used when the tractor has rollover protection. ROPS and seat belts work together to protect the operator during a rollover.
PTO shafts and rotating parts should be guarded. Workers should keep clothing, hands, hair, and tools away from rotating shafts, belts, pulleys, and attachments.
Attachments and implements change how the tractor handles. Loaders, mowers, blades, forks, trailers, and rear implements can affect visibility, balance, braking, and turning.
Operators should use caution around pedestrians, traffic, buildings, gates, fences, and parked equipment. Blind spots and wide turning areas can surprise nearby workers.
Safe tractor operation depends on inspection, speed control, slope awareness, guarded moving parts, and clear communication with anyone working nearby.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the tractor and attachments before use.
- Use seat belts when rollover protection is installed.
- Use caution on slopes, ditches, soft shoulders, and uneven ground.
- Keep PTO shafts and rotating parts guarded.
- Keep people clear of attachments and travel paths.
- Adjust speed for terrain and visibility.
- Use lights, signals, and traffic controls when operating near roads.
Ask the Crew
- Has the tractor and attachment been inspected?
- Are rollover risks present on today’s terrain?
- Are PTO guards and other safety devices in place?
- Could attachments block visibility or affect stability?
- Are pedestrians, traffic, or nearby workers protected?
