Key Hazards

  • Crushed fingers or hands between the wedge and log
  • Logs twisting, splitting unevenly, or ejecting unexpectedly
  • Hydraulic hose leaks, pressure release, or equipment failure
  • Pinch points around the wedge, ram, beam, and controls
  • Slips, trips, or loss of balance on uneven outdoor surfaces
  • Coworkers standing too close to the splitting area

2–3 Minute Talk Script

Log splitters create tremendous force. That force can split wood quickly, but it can also crush fingers, eject material, or injure workers standing too close.

Workers should inspect the log splitter before use. Wedge, ram, controls, hydraulic hoses, fittings, fluid leaks, guards, tires, trailer hitch, and engine or power source should be checked.

Hands should stay away from the wedge, ram, and ends of the log. Workers should position hands on the sides of the log only long enough to place it, then move clear before activating the splitter.

Logs should be placed flat and centered when possible. Crooked logs, knots, cracks, forks, and wet or frozen wood can split unpredictably or twist under pressure.

Workers should stand to the side of the splitting path and keep coworkers, bystanders, and pets away from the machine.

Hydraulic leaks should never be checked with bare hands. High-pressure fluid can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury.

The splitter should be set up on stable, level ground. Mud, slopes, ice, brush, or uneven ground can cause slips or unstable machine operation.

Safe log splitter use depends on inspection, hand placement, stable setup, hydraulic safety, controlling the work area, and stopping when a log does not sit or split safely.

Safety Reminders

  • Inspect the log splitter before use.
  • Keep hands away from the wedge and ram.
  • Place logs flat and centered when possible.
  • Stand to the side of the splitting path.
  • Keep bystanders away from the work area.
  • Do not check hydraulic leaks with bare hands.
  • Set up on stable, level ground.

Ask the Crew

  • Is the log splitter in safe operating condition?
  • Are hydraulic hoses and fittings free of leaks or damage?
  • Is the log positioned flat and centered?
  • Where are hands before the controls are activated?
  • Are coworkers and bystanders clear of the splitting area?
