Key Hazards
- Backing incidents from large blind spots
- Cargo shifting or falling during transport
- Falls from liftgates, steps, or cargo areas
- Struck-by hazards during loading and unloading
- Low clearance impacts with roofs, signs, trees, or doors
- Vehicle movement from poor parking, braking, or wheel control
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Box trucks are useful for transporting tools, supplies, equipment, and materials, but their size creates visibility, clearance, loading, and cargo securement hazards.
Drivers should inspect the truck before use. Tires, mirrors, lights, brakes, horn, wipers, backup alarm, doors, liftgate, steps, and cargo area should be checked.
Backing should be minimized whenever possible. When backing is necessary, drivers should use mirrors, cameras, spotters, alarms, and slow controlled movement.
Cargo should be secured before travel. Boxes, tools, cylinders, carts, pallets, and equipment can shift, fall, or block doors if not restrained.
Workers should use caution when entering or exiting the cargo area. Steps, liftgates, wet floors, loose straps, and uneven ground can cause falls.
Liftgates should be operated according to procedure. Workers should keep feet, hands, and bystanders clear of pinch points and platform movement.
Clearance should be checked before driving under canopies, garage doors, tree limbs, signs, bridges, and overhead utilities.
Safe box truck use depends on vehicle inspection, careful backing, cargo securement, safe loading practices, and constant awareness of height, weight, and blind spots.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the box truck before use.
- Secure cargo before driving.
- Minimize backing when possible.
- Use a spotter when visibility is limited.
- Watch steps, liftgates, and cargo floors for fall hazards.
- Check overhead clearance before driving under structures.
- Park securely and chock wheels when needed.
Ask the Crew
- Has the box truck been inspected before use?
- Is cargo secured from shifting or falling?
- Can backing be avoided or controlled with a spotter?
- Are liftgate and step hazards controlled?
- Are height clearance and parking conditions safe?
