Key Hazards
- Contact with rotating mixer paddles
- Paint, primer, or coating splashes to skin or eyes
- Chemical vapor or odor exposure
- Drill torque, kickback, or loss of control
- Electric shock from cords, plugs, or wet work areas
- Spills creating slip hazards or cleanup exposure
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Paint mixers are often used with drills or powered tools to mix paint, coatings, primers, and other liquids. The hazards include rotating parts, chemical exposure, splashes, and tool control.
Workers should inspect the mixer before use. The drill, paddle, chuck, cord or battery, switch, handle, bucket, and lid should be in good condition.
The correct mixer paddle and speed should be used for the product. Running too fast can cause splashing, air bubbles, or loss of control.
Hands, clothing, hair, and jewelry should stay clear of the rotating paddle. The mixer should be stopped before reaching into the bucket or adjusting the paddle.
Paint and coatings should be reviewed for PPE and ventilation needs. Labels and safety data sheets should guide glove, eye, respiratory, and ventilation requirements.
The bucket should be stable before mixing. A bucket that tips, spins, or slides can spill product or pull the tool unexpectedly.
Cords and electrical tools should be kept away from wet floors, spills, and damaged extension cords. Battery tools should be made safe before changing paddles.
Safe paint mixer use depends on inspection, controlled speed, stable containers, splash protection, ventilation, and cleaning up spills before they create slip or exposure hazards.
Safety Reminders
- Inspect the drill, paddle, and container before use.
- Use the correct paddle and speed.
- Keep hands and clothing away from rotating parts.
- Wear eye, skin, and respiratory protection when required.
- Provide ventilation when product fumes require it.
- Stabilize buckets before mixing.
- Clean up spills promptly.
Ask the Crew
- What product is being mixed?
- What PPE and ventilation are required?
- Is the drill and mixer paddle in safe condition?
- Is the bucket stable before mixing?
- Could splashes, cords, or spills create hazards?
