“Safe Use of Wheelbarrows”
Key Hazards
- Back strain from overloading
- Tip-overs on uneven surfaces
- Foot injuries when lowering or dumping loads
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Safe use of wheelbarrows is important for construction crews, landscapers, and maintenance workers. Although simple, wheelbarrows can cause injuries when overloaded or operated on uneven ground.
Workers should load heavier materials toward the front of the bucket and avoid filling the wheelbarrow beyond a comfortable level. Overloading is a major cause of back strain and tip-overs.
Different job sites present different hazards. Construction sites may contain ruts or debris, landscaping work may involve slopes, and maintenance tasks may require navigating tight areas.
Workers should keep both hands on the handles, walk slowly, and ensure good footing. When dumping, workers should maintain balance and watch for pinch points around the wheel and handles.
Safety Reminders
- Do not overload the wheelbarrow.
- Keep both hands on the handles.
- Walk slowly over uneven terrain.
- Watch your footing when dumping loads.
Ask the Crew
- Are today’s loads manageable with a wheelbarrow?
- Do we need extra help moving heavy materials?
