“Trench Box Safety”
Key Hazards
- Trench collapse
- Workers entering unprotected excavations
- Improper placement of trench boxes
2–3 Minute Talk Script
Trench box safety is critical during excavation work. Soil conditions can change quickly, and trench collapses occur without warning.
Trench boxes must be properly sized, positioned, and installed before workers enter excavations. Boxes should extend above the trench surface to prevent material from falling in.
Workers should never enter a trench that is not protected. Even shallow excavations can collapse and cause serious injury.
Equipment and spoil piles should be kept away from trench edges to reduce pressure on trench walls.
Safety Reminders
- Use trench boxes in all required excavations.
- Ensure boxes extend above trench edges.
- Keep spoil piles away from trench edges.
- Never enter unprotected trenches.
Ask the Crew
- Is the trench properly protected before entry?
- Are soil and equipment kept away from trench edges?
