2–3 Minute Talk Script

A pre-departure inspection is the last opportunity to find a problem while the boat is still in a controlled location. Small defects that seem manageable on land can become serious emergencies once the vessel is underway.

The hull, transom, deck, rails, seats, hatches, fittings, and drain systems should be checked for damage, cracks, loose hardware, water intrusion, or other conditions that could affect flotation or stability. The drain plug should be verified before launch when the vessel uses one.

The operator should test steering, throttle, shift controls, engine starting, kill-switch or engine cut-off equipment when provided, bilge pumps, lights, horn, and gauges. Unusual noise, binding, leaks, warning alarms, or slow response should be corrected before departure.

Fuel systems should be inspected for leaks, damaged hoses, loose connections, odors, and proper ventilation. Fuel quantity should support the planned mission with an appropriate reserve rather than assuming the exact planned distance will be enough.

Battery terminals, cables, switches, and electrical connections should be secure and protected. Communication devices, navigation equipment, flashlights, and other electronics should be charged, tested, and protected from water exposure.

Required lifesaving and emergency equipment should be present, serviceable, and immediately accessible. This may include personal flotation devices, throwable flotation, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, first-aid supplies, lines, anchors, emergency signals, and rescue equipment based on the operation.

Mission equipment should be secured so it cannot shift, block controls, interfere with movement, damage the hull, or fall overboard. Sampling gear, tools, coolers, batteries, fuel containers, and heavy equipment should be placed with weight distribution in mind.

If a critical item fails inspection, the boat should remain out of service until the condition is corrected. A schedule, sampling deadline, or short trip does not justify launching an unsafe vessel.
