2–3 Minute Talk Script
A disabled boat may lose propulsion, steering, electrical power, fuel supply, navigation equipment, or hull integrity. The first priority is crew safety and control of the situation, not an immediate return to the schedule.
The operator should assess the boat's position, drift, traffic, wind, current, water depth, nearby structures, and immediate threats. Personal flotation devices should remain fastened, and crew movement should be controlled.
Emergency communication should begin early when the boat may not be restored quickly or is drifting toward danger. The crew should report the vessel, location, people aboard, nature of the failure, and any immediate medical or environmental hazards.
An anchor may help control drift when it can be used safely and is suitable for the location. The crew should avoid placing hands or feet in line with moving rope, wrapping line around body parts, or anchoring where current can swamp or pull the boat sideways.
Repairs should be limited to actions the crew is trained and equipped to perform. Workers should not reach near propellers, belts, hot engines, fuel leaks, exposed electrical components, or moving water without proper isolation and control.
The crew should generally remain with the boat unless staying aboard creates a greater danger. Entering the water, attempting to walk a boat through current, or transferring between vessels can create additional emergencies.
Towing or assistance should be coordinated with trained personnel. Tow lines, attachment points, speed, communication, and crew location must be controlled because a failed line or unstable connection can injure workers or capsize a small boat.
After the event, the vessel should be removed from service until the failure is inspected and corrected. The crew should document the incident, equipment performance, communication, and lessons that affect future operations.
