Brazing and Soldering Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
The crew should review the joining process, fuel gas, ventilation, hot-work permit, fire-watch needs, combustible conditions, pipe contents and pressure, PPE, cylinder setup, and post-work monitoring.
Combustibles should be removed or protected, openings and hidden spaces checked, extinguishers positioned, and the required hot-work authorization completed before heating begins.
Cylinders, regulators, hoses, valves, torches, flashback devices where used, and connections should be inspected and kept upright, secured, and protected from damage.
Pipe and equipment should be isolated, depressurized, drained, purged, or otherwise prepared so heat does not act on trapped pressure, flammable residue, or hazardous contents.
Ventilation should control fumes from base metals, coatings, fluxes, solder, brazing alloys, and cleaning products, with respiratory protection used when required.
Hot fittings and tools should be identified, allowed to cool, and kept from contact with workers or combustibles; fire watch and final inspection should continue for the required period.
Work should stop when gas is smelled, ventilation is inadequate, pipe contents are uncertain, a combustible cannot be protected, or fire-watch and emergency controls are unavailable.
