Bolting and Connecting Structural Steel Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.
The connecting crew should review the erection drawings, member identification, connection type, bolt requirements, lift path, worker positions, fall protection, tool tethering, signals, and release criteria.
Connectors should remain outside pinch zones and use tag lines, drift pins, spud wrenches, and controlled hoisting to align members without placing hands between steel surfaces.
The required initial bolts or connections should be installed and secured before the hoisting line is released or the member is used to support other loads.
Fall-protection systems and access methods should allow movement and connection work without unprotected climbing, excessive reaching, or reliance on unstable members.
Impact wrenches, tension-control tools, hoses, cords, and sockets should be inspected and used from stable positions with protection against reaction force and dropped components.
Tools, bolts, containers, and loose hardware should be secured, with the area below controlled against falling objects and unauthorized entry.
Connection work should stop when the member cannot be controlled, bolt holes or connections do not align, required fall protection is unavailable, communication is lost, or structural stability is uncertain.
