Torch-Applied Roofing and Hot Asphalt Safety requires workers to recognize the task-specific hazards before work begins and to use the controls established for the project.

The roofing plan should identify the approved system, hot-work authorization, combustible construction, propane and kettle setup, material routes, ventilation, fall protection, extinguishers, fire watch, and post-work inspection.

Combustible surfaces, insulation, voids, penetrations, parapets, and concealed spaces should be inspected and protected before flame or hot asphalt is introduced.

Propane cylinders, hoses, regulators, torches, kettles, valves, pumps, and temperature controls should be inspected, secured, separated from ignition and traffic hazards, and operated by trained workers.

Hot asphalt should be heated, transported, poured, and applied with equipment and PPE designed for splash, heat, and burn exposure, with routes kept clear and stable.

Fall protection and material staging should allow workers to control torches, buckets, rolls, and hoses without backing toward edges, tripping, or dragging equipment across access paths.

Fire extinguishers, emergency shutdown, first aid, fire watch, and repeated inspection of the roof and spaces below should remain in place for the required period after heat work ends.

Work should stop when wind affects flame control, propane is smelled, temperature control fails, combustible conditions cannot be protected, fall protection is compromised, or fire watch cannot be maintained.
